Vacation season rolls around, and it never ends. You can't decide where to go or what to do. It's not that you don't want to travel and it's not that you don't want to spend good old fashioned quality time together as a clan united. The problem is, no one can agree on a vacation!
If this scenario is a familiar one in your household or among your circle of friends, you are not alone. Some travelers flock to the sun and sand, while others hike in harmony together through pristine mountain highlands. Others just can't seem to agree on a daily activity.
Just east of the Cascades in Central Oregon rests a planned resort community that just might be the solution to your travel destination debate. Bordered by the Deschutes National Forest, Sunriver, Oregon, draws vacationers from across the country looking for a new spot to stay awhile. The town is comprised of residential areas, recreational facilities, and a commercial development called Sunriver Village Mall that bustles with restaurants and shopping, and is flanked by Mt. Bachelor, a ski-lover's paradise.
Sports nuts will love Sunriver, and even those who just wish they were the physical type will have ample opportunity to indulge their inner urge to be an athlete. The Pacific Crest Weekend Sports Festival, held each summer, includes a Half-Iron Triathlon, Endurance Duathlon, Marathon & Half Marathon, and Olympic Distance Triathlon & Duathlon, among other events. One of the most well-known multi-sport events in the Northwest, this conglomerate of competitions offers scenic and adrenaline-boosting opportunities to play or watch. The Jeld-Wen Tradition Golf Tournament, also each summer, is a Pro-Am tournament in which in which both professionals and amateurs can play together as a team. Other exciting sporting events worthy of your attention include the U.S. Bank Pole Pedal Paddle in May, the Cascade Cycling Classic in August, and ski season at Mt. Bachelor, which usually opens by November. Mt. Bachelor, Oregon's premier ski area, is just 18 miles from Sunriver, and the Deschutes National forest has outdoor activities such as fishing, rafting, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, and snowmobiling.
The summer months are the favorite of many pets in Sunriver, especially during the 4th of July Pet Parade. Held in conjunction with the 4th of July Celebration and the Annual Firemans Picnic, Fido can walk leashed of course in a parade with a gaggle of other animals that just might include llamas, goats, and even stuffed animals.
