R&B concert etiquette

by Amelia Danielle

Created on: May 28, 2008

When attending an R&B concert, it really all comes down to three main concepts. Outfit, friends and drinks. These three things can absolutely make or break the entire R&B concert experience. Lets take a look at two scenarios shall we?

Scenario #1: Linda won tickets to the upcoming Usher concert. She's stoked. The radio DJ proudly announced that she's "In the house.." and she promptly picks up her tickets; one for her and two additional tickets to bring friends along. These are front row center, perfect for getting sweated on by Usher, his back up dancers and whatever surprise guest he's bringing to the stage. Linda decides to ask her best friend since Jr. High, Shaquisha and her sister-in-law, Francine. She chooses these two young ladies for one basic reason; she knows if she doesn't take them, she'll have to hear about it later. "Why didn't you bring me? We've been girls since we were 11!" And, "We're family, you should have taken me, I love Usher!" Besides, she thinks to herself, whats the worse that can happen; they always have fun together. After handing out the tickets to her ecstatic guests-to-be, they go to the mall to pick out an outfit. She thinks to herself that since she's in the front row she has a pretty good chance of being asked to come on stage and dance with Usher. This of course, would be a dream come true especially if he sings that throw-back, "Slow Jam". But Linda decides to take it a jump further. She decides her chances for being pulled on stage and possibly featured in his concert DVD will rise even higher, if she wears something that helps her stand out. She settles on a polyester skin tight leopard-print jumpsuit in a nice bright Chartreuse. After trying it on and stepping out of the dressing room, Linda's sister-in-law and Shquisha stand and applaud. "Oh Girl, that outfit is IT!" they say. Fast-forward to the night of the concert. The crowd is gathered in the lobby of the venue, everyone buying Usher tee-shirts, taking pictures in front of the concert backdrop and heading to the bar for pre-show drinks. Linda and her guests scan the drink selection, and just before Linda opens her mouth to order a Stella Artois, Shaquisha interrupts and shouts, "SHOTS!" Stifled and intrigued, our poor Linda agrees. After downing three shots (because shot number four went down the front of her outfit after loosing motor-control) the trio wobbles down to the front row and the concert begins. Half way through, just as expected, Usher has his bodyguards
