I open my eyes
only to see the hands
of my clock
have spun
around two hours
and continue
ticking
as my head
sinks
into
Egyptian cotton casing, a pool
of tranquility
that sucks me
in, drowning me
in a dream
of distant thought, but a light
that never dims
keeps buzzing
in the corner
of my mind
and I can't
shut it off
I just want one hour of sleep
I try to squeeze
my eyes
shut, forcing
my body back
into slumber,
but insomnia
is prying
my eyes
back open, only to realize
the night
has won again
and a new day
has begun
