Commentary on long-distance moving

Unless you're in the military or some other type of job that requires constant long distance moving, then you need to consider this question for a moment; Why are you moving?

It's difficult to move away from home and to break free from all the invisible ties that bind you into the community you're living in. Although advance planning is the key to a smooth

transition from one place to another, you need to seriously consider the emotional side of a
long distance move.

Are you trying to escape a failed relationship or business venture? In other words, are you moving toward something you really want or is this an attempt to run away from something you don't want?

If you have a family, then you need to consider their feelings about a long distance move.
Leaving behind friends, family and familiar things can be very stressful. Children may find
it very difficult to be forced to start over as 'the new kid' in school.

They will miss their friends, family if you had any in your old place and they'll need to learn and adapt to an entirely different culture, even if you're not leaving the country. Think about how different it is to live in Houma, Louisiana if you've always lived in San Francisco, California, imagine moving to a remote village in Wales, when your kids grew up in London.

However, once you've made up your mind and have accepted your reasons for moving out-weigh the upset it will inevitably cause, then you need to get down to the business of preparation. You need to take care of closing down your current household, while finding and setting up a new
one somewhere far away...

Luckily, the internet can be a massive help in this process. You can find the best prices
on moving companies or rental vans to do it yourself, you can preview housing in the
area that you'll be moving into and find an agent to help you with a new home purchase
or rental. Actually, it's best to either rent for 6 months when you move to a new area
or visit a couple of times before actually moving there.

The worst thing you can do is move to a neighbourhood you don't like.

You can find the cheapest flights on-line, but remember to keep important documents with you rather than in storage or in your luggage. This includes immunization records, passports, birth certificates, marriage certificate and a list of important contacts at your old home such as your children's school, doctor, and people that would make good references should you
