Mother and me in the Garden
Oklahoma 1998
I hesitate to call the 6 feet by 3 feet flower bed a garden, but my mother and I tended it with care and daily watering in the summer of 1998. She had enjoyed tending the plants in her own garden, but in the heat and humidity of South Texas, anything planted will grow lush and full. The wind-driven plains of Oklahoma presented a challenge. But we managed to grow vibrant red salvia contrasted against its blue relative, mealycup sage. In a shady corner protected from the winds, we installed a birdbath surrounded by lush, dark green Hostas. A garden gnome stood guard over our handiwork.
As we weeded and watered and made sure the birdbath was full, Mother told me stories of her childhood. She spoke of the plants in her mother's garden and identified them by their Spanish and Indian names: albahaca (basil), margaritas (daisies), cempacchil (marigolds).
