Novel excerpts: Romance

Jackson's head spun around quickly, looking at the table where she saw the first cute guy. Now sitting next to him was a boy more gorgeous than any she had ever seen.

He had fair length blackish brown hair that moved as he did. His eyes were a dark color that looked as though they were filled with endless mysteries; mysteries that just couldn't be unraveled without serious searching. His skin was a russet brown that shone as a beacon of light under the ceiling lights in the classroom.

Just as that moment, he turned his head to look in Jack's direction. Her heart skipped a beat as she saw the boy's smile; warm and open, caring. His eyes turned inquisitive as he saw her staring and, before she herself knew it, Jack's jaw dropped. Trying to compose herself before he saw her in this very unflattering state, Jacks smiled delicately. Sergeant Major began calling the class to order right at that moment and Jack heard a deep voice from the back of the room. She looked back to see the boy she had been watching just moments before speaking easily to Major.

"What I need to know," he said, standing up straighter than a board as he spoke. "We'll see about that later," Major said to him, turning his attention to Sergeant Major.

"I'm going to call the roll now, and I want you to answer with a simple here," Sergeant Major said, picking up a packet of paper from his desk. "Ninth graders first; Charlie Townsend, Silver, Belt."

As the names were called and the students answered Jack was looking out of the corner of her eye at the boy at the back desk, getting the feeling that she, herself was being watched.

"Black," Sergeant Major finally called." "Here, Sir," she said to him, noticing that the mystery boy's eyes lit up with more intensity than before.

As Major stepped up and began calling the roll for the older students, Jackson found herself waiting, possibly more anxiously than she should be, for him to call the mystery man's name. Finally, she heard that voice again, just after the name, Welch was called. Jackson's eyes lit up. She smiled and she had no clue why.

After the roll had been called, Major talked a little bit about what they should expect from this class, handed out the course syllabus and the personal information forms.

After everything had been passed out and all words spoken the students were dismissed to take a break. Several students pushed their chairs back immediately and walked out toward the hallway; everyone except for Jackson,
