Two thirteen year old boys with a dog that loves fishing. What more could two boys want? Only a fish at the end of the line. Fishing is one of the best outdoor opportunities that any young person or adult should experience. Living out in the country has given my boys many chances to catch the "one that got away." Funny thing, "it" always gets away or the dog got it!
Fishing can be relaxing or exciting. My thirteen year old son and his best friend enjoy fishing in the creek that flows through the countryside right by our property. There are many trees and bushes that form the stream of water that is very refreshing on a hot summer day. The dog also appreciates the coolness of the water, as the summers in Iowa can be extremely hot and humid.
Everyone from all walks of life can enjoy fishing. There are many Moms that enjoy fishing with their kids. Several Grandparents enjoy taking their grandchildren out on the family boat and dipping a hook into the water. Fishing is not a discriminatory sport, you can live anywhere and find a stream or lake to throw that fish a meal. By baiting a hook, you can open the doors to new adventures and excitement. A tackle box can provide any boy with entertainment like no other. The bobbers, weights, fishing line, and smelly bait can keep most boys occupied for several minutes.
My son and his best friend enjoy fishing in the creek so much that they even try to fish with nets. They sport tall, rubber boots and wade in the water. It is quite a site! Amazingly they do catch some blue gills when they dip their nets into the shallow stream. These boys are having the time of their lives. They comment that the "hot spring" seems to bubble under a bridge that goes under an old dirt road. The road is rarely traveled and there is the occasional skunk or raccoon within the area. Therefore, the site, smell, and sounds can be unique, unlike no other.
My son's best friend lives in town and enjoys coming to the country to see what he can catch out of the water. These boys have learned how to work together as a team and have also learned to respect the word patience. There are many things in life that we need to wait for. Fishing is a great way to show teens that good things can come to those who wait. I am sure there will be many fun times at the creek this summer and for many seasons to come! Nature at it's best. Pick up a pole and toss that line in!
