Journalism: Newspaper vs. television

by Lucy Crabtree

Created on: May 27, 2008

Each and everyday Britain is overloaded with all different types of news whether it's through the newspaper or via the television. But how much of a difference is there between the two mediums? Newspapers provide us with more of a variety of news from major incidents happening in the world to what our favourite celebrities are getting up to, where as the news we get on our T.V screens could be classed as more important and relevant news.

I, myself feel that reading the newspapers offers you a lot more and if you do like to know more in-depth information about subjects then the newspapers can provide you with that. They have sections for all different types of news and information and do not have to worry about cutting certain news out because of time issues. You also have several types of newspapers, for example the Sun - which provides you with the latest headline plus showbiz gossip, T.V listing, sports, quizzes and puzzles. Or the Times - which also provides you with the latest headlines and sports information but wont deluge into the on goings of the latest celebrity troubles and focuses more on business and life style articles.

I believe one of the main reasons people watch the news and don't read the papers is because they feel they can trust it more. And why wouldn't they? It's as though the news readers are in your house, you are watching them with your own eyes, so it's inevitable you are going to trust what they are saying. But this is not always the case, many news items that a journalist or newsreader may get are normally from the same source and don't differ much from each other. Watching the news through the T.V is also less hassle than buying a paper, it's free of charge and you can get it in your home, however you don't have the variety you get with a newspaper. There are different types of news broadcasts; you can get half hour programmes which will provide with the latest news and weather. And you can also get news channels which last all day and will give you the latest news as it comes in they can also provide you general information about business, leisure and much more.

People may get an impression or judge the mediums in which the news is being brought to you by but just because the news is being delivered in different ways does not mean its different itself. Watching the news on the television does not mean it is more accurate or correct it's just another way of getting it to you. And reading the news in the papers does not mean it is any less important again its just another way of getting it to you.
