I noticed this title doesn't ask if Oprah is racist because she backed a black candidate. And she isn't. She backed the candidate she related to the most, but she is still a racist.
She's racist because she said that white, middleclass women (the majority of her fan base) were stupid. (I believe the context was related to their voting habits.) She's racist because she supports people who make racist remarks against white people calling it freedom of speech. But don't think of exercising your freedom of speech around her if you are white. Don't think about saying anything around her regardless of your skin color if it is directed toward black people. (And I'm sorry for using black if it offends you, but I don't know what politically correct word is in season. I refuse to say anything that is hyphenated American. You are either or American or you aren't but that's a different rabbit trail all-together.) Oprah does not care about ending racism though she claims to; she cares about ending any remarks that are even perceived to be prejudiced against black people.
I am not racist. I have friends who are black, Mexican, Honduran, German, Irish and so on- in short, I get along with everyone. I hold my prejudices based on the things individuals do to me only and not what a person's skin tone is. I think it is wrong to judge people based on their color. But it is an American right to speak our minds even if the one that it is coming from is narrow or misled. Oprah can be as racist as she wants to be. My beef isn't with her racism towards non-blacks; it is with her hypocrisy about it. Either she needs to continue to be racist but acknowledge the right of others to do the same, or (and preferably) if she is going to protest racism against blacks, she needs to stop being racist towards everyone else, particularly her fan base. My beef is also with the people who watch her show, continuing to support her for doing so. Apparently, the price of her fan's turning a blind eye (and indeed, the price of their very souls) is a new car or free boots in the latest fashions, or tips on how to cleanse your colon without a doctor's visit.
I applaud her efforts to get rappers to stop using "the "n" word" but in her eyes, I would be nothing but a cracka' man automatically making me ignorant and racist to her. At least, that is the way I perceive it based on the way she speaks of white people and men as groups. But these are merely the rantings of a straight, white man that doesn't fit well into her target demographic and who, though never owned slaves, had no family who owned slaves, is not a racist and tries to promote not making racist remarks, is always going to be held responsible for the plight of black people world-wide until and after the day I die, so my opinion does not matter.
