When faith becomes real

by Peter S. Ng

Created on: May 27, 2008

I think for every Christian, when faith becomes real to them, it is usually out of a personal experience. Bear in mind that God might have put people along the way or in situations to help us realize and mature in that faith. I believe he has plans for us to come to him and not everyone's experience is necessarily the same. I am often taken back when I hear people question the validity of personal experiences with God. I have even heard a pastor said that not all people experience God. He said, in fact, some Christians go through life without experiencing God. That is so bizarre to me. I am sure there are some differences in opinion as to personal experiences from the many different Christian denominations. The God that I believe in, however, is a personal God who has allowed me to come to know him, even though sometimes I am just too stubborn or arrogant to seek/listen to his guidance.

For me, the following events in my life affirmed that God indeed has plans in every aspect of my life.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. (Proverbs 1:7)
It was shortly after I graduated from college. I was in need of a job and was getting desperate. Job offers for graduating Chemical Engineers was few and far between. However, I finally landed a job, as a Pilot Plant Manager with the company I worked for during my school years, but it was only after much hand wringing and anxious waiting. That in itself is another story. The company that I worked for was a small family business. The Pilot Plant has never done well as a department financially and was always in the red, a whopping 21 years prior to my taking over. Even though I had worked in the department all of my college life, I had really no experience running the department. Furthermore, there was additional pressure from the president of the company to turn the department around within a couple of years or face the consequences of closing the department. That was the challenge I was given when I was hired for the job. It was make very clear to me, survive or decease. You can say it was a real pressure cooker. Furthermore, I also have the task of now managing people that I used to work with shoulder to shoulder and that also was a tough lesson for me. My stomach churned with every thought of the challenge that lay ahead of me. In my desperation, I again turned to God for his help, knowing that just hard work would not get me through the challenge. Bear in mind, I, of course also have to do my part. Anyway, on
