Evaluating Coby DVD players

by JC Campbell

Created on: May 27, 2008

When it comes to evaluating the top DVD players in the electronics industry, the name Coby is unlikely to spring to mind. As a brand name, it does not compare to the electronics giants like Sony, Panasonic or Toshiba. This does not mean though that Coby players are poor quality machines to be avoided. One major difference you will find when comparing Coby DVD players with their illustrious big name competitors is the price. Coby players can be purchased at next to nothing by comparison to the major brands but will play your DVDs in exactly the same way.

Consumers have discovered that the cheap, small brand name players are actually more valuable than the mainstream in that they are capable of playing DVDs from different regions without any additional connections. Cheap does not always equal bad. We live in a very competitive technological society which requires companies to produce low-cost electronics for the masses. Coby may not be a household name in the world of electronics but they have produced DVD players that will suffice for our requirements. Paying more for a brand name may be considered a wise move to ensure quality and a better written guarantee, but considering the low cost of a Coby, we do not have a great deal to lose should it cease working.

It is now a common thing for major stores to stock low-cost electronics at very low prices. Often, consumers see no real difference in quality when it comes to things like DVD players. There may be fewer features than you will find in the major brand name players but this is usually of no consequence to the general consumer. The fact that a DVD is functional and serves the purpose for which it has been bought is all the matters to most consumers. Unless we are looking for special features found in the more up-market models, the Coby will give us all we need to enjoy our DVDs.

The principle that you get what you pay for applies here. The quality of the parts used in construction will not be as good as those found in the top range, high-price players from the likes of Panasonic and Sony. Knowing you are paying way below the standard price should be a reminder not to expect too much from your Coby player. It may be the kind of DVD player you will buy as a second unit to use elsewhere around the house as a substitute for your quality machine.

The Internet is useful in allowing us to research Coby models for price and quality. It may be useful to seek out reviews by people who have already purchased a Coby DVD player and read their honest feedback. Being realistic, buying a Coby is buying a basic player that may not last as long as you would like. If money is no object, you will no doubt opt for the higher priced, good quality player from one of the leading manufacturers. If you simply want a DVD player that is functional, the Coby may be the one for you.
