Elizabeth Dorsett opened the back door to her small cottage and set her purse on the kitchen counter. She has lived here for about three years now. It isn't the greatest but it's comfortable. Her closest neighbor is about five miles on either side. The rude obnoxious neighbors with their stereos up full blast, domestic arguments, and just plain inconsiderate attitudes in the apartment buildings got to be more than she could live with. As soon as she saw the small cottage without any nearby neighbors, she knew she had to have it. It is peaceful, quiet, and the woods around the house are beautiful. In the fall, the leaves change color. In the spring, everything starts turning green again and blooms. Liz always loved to watch the seasons change, especially in southern Michigan. Her favorites are the daffodils and crocus in the spring. In the summer, she has a small vegetable garden and in the fall, a chrysanthemum garden in front that runs the length of the house. Jack-in-the-pulpit and iris grow wild all over the place. She also loves the lily-of-the-valley, wild geraniums, and columbine that grow wild in the woods.
All she wanted to do is sit in front of the TV and have a drink; it had been one of those days. She walked straight across the kitchen to the refrigerator and poured a glass of wine, downing it in a single swallow and pouring another. It always relaxed her to have two small glasses of wine after work. She walked through the dining area where she had a small oak table with just two chairs.
Going to the right of the kitchen she went through the archway into the small living room. The house wasn't very large, but it was home and one of the coziest places she has ever lived.
The only thing in the living room was a couch, TV, stereo, and a couple of large plants. The couch was what she called a truck treasure' because one of her friends was going to have it taken to the dump but she took it. It was in perfect shape, it wasn't a ratty moth eaten couch. It was an older beige three-cushion couch which was clean and sturdy. Every time she went shopping for furniture it was too soft or wasn't comfortable. This was a simple plain couch and it suited her perfectly. Across the room, she had a small compact entertainment center. Her television was a small thirteen-inch color, nothing fancy.
Like her TV, the stereo was just an inexpensive turntable, dual cassette, CD, and AM-FM radio combination.
She just wasn't a fancy person and having a lot of expensive things didn't
