It seems everyone who's in the blogging game these days is doing it for one reason and one reason only; to make a buck. When I started my first blog, it was strictly for fun, but I was soon sucked into the blogging for profit game. I've always wanted to be a professional writer, and I thought this was my ticket to fame and fortune. What I didn't realize was that blogging for money is work, and work is not fun.
I run several blogs, most of which are for profit. However, I have one that is just for me to let loose. If you're going to start a blog, don't do it because the guy down the street said you could make lots of money doing it. You can, but it's unlikely. Do it because it's something you want to do. Do it because you need an outlet where you can just be yourself without fearing what others will say.
The worst part about blogging for money is that you've got to know about search engines, keywords, pagerank, and a lot more. When you blog for fun, you don't have to worry about whether or not Google is going to raise your pagerank, or kick you in the head and take it away. You don't have to worry about how many keywords are in your posts, whether or not you're gaining any readers with your RSS feeds, or whether you're posting enough or too much.
When you blog for profit, there is always someone out there who is more than happy to point out your flaws to the rest of the world. When you blog for fun, these people are a lot less likely to leave comments on your posts. They still may call you out, but you can be a little less professional and tell them what you really think about their comments.
Blogging for fun can also be a great way to relieve stress. If you've had a really bad day, you can go home, jump on your blog, and get all those emotions out of your system. You can tell the world what a jerk your boss is, or rant about a customer who ruined your day. You can also discuss generalized subjects such as what you planted in your garden or what you're making for dinner that night. When you blog for fun, you can talk about anything you want and not worry about straying from your niche.
Blogging is taking the Internet by storm, and nearly everyone that starts a blog is doing it to make some money. Plus, most of these people are jumping on the Make Money Online bandwagon, whether they know anything about it or not. It's nice to come across a blog that is more personal, more generalized. I would much rather read a blog about everyday life, than find another MMO blog. If you're going to do something, you should be able to have fun with it.
I highly recommend blogging. I love my blogs, as they give me a creative outlet and a way to get a lot of things off my chest. I will probably be blogging for profit for many years to come, but I will always have at least one that is strictly for my own enjoyment. The Internet is a wonderful tool for gaining information, and blogs are making it even easier to gain that information. Blogging is a great way to earn a little extra money, but I think everyone should have at least one site where they can blog for fun.
