Poetry: Procrastination

by Richard Hooton

Created on: May 27, 2008

I started to procrastinate today,
then put it off until tomorrow.
Drives me bonkers to behave that way,
And leaves me feeling dreadful sorrow.

I tried so hard to start my day,
By blowing off a chore or two.
But realized I could not wait,
I had so very much to do.

How do others make it work for them?
I pondered as I began my task,
Who can tell me how to shrug off work,
I wondered who to ask.

So many things get in my way,
and they refuse to stand aside.
I'm forced to deal with every job,
and take it in my stride.

How much I yearn to skirt my work,
and leave it all behind,
How dearly I would pay to shirk
the burden of the daily grind.

But alas, I could not find a way,
so I put it off awhile,
"I'll procrastinate another day,"
I vowed with half a smile.

But I must have uttered it aloud
'cause my boss walked up behind,
caught me plotting to be lazy, and said
"That's right, just put it from your mind."

He said "I have a better plan,
get to work now or you're fired.
You'll have no home, no car, no food."
Then I truly felt inspired.

My procrastinating ways were done,
My big idea landed flat
No work, no job, no money
Why couldn't I have thought of that?
