Plot holes in George Lucas' Star Wars series

by Antonio Jacobs

Created on: May 27, 2008

As long as we are talking about plot holes an Imperial Super Star Destroyer can fit through, let's be clear. We haven't even scratched the surface. Even if we take into consideration that George Lucas may have written the past after the future even if he invented new characters for the new movies, and even if he had to compromise several important story points because of the existing technology, there are certain elements that are inexplicable. But before I go to that, let me address the plot holes already addressed:

I can understand Obi-Wan having a conversation with Yoda in Luke's presence about training simply for Luke's benefit. But also understand that Yoda had to approve Obi-Wan's promotion from Padawan status to that of full Knight after Qui-Gonn's death. Obi-Wan may have required training as a child from Yoda, and also training to achieve Master status as well. Also, There is talk about additional training at the end of Episode Three on how to attain the astral form that Obi-Wan takes in Episodes four through six.

As far as Chewbacca lack of respect for Obi-wan, Chewie might not have recognized Obi-Wan. After all, Obi-wan is referred to as Ben throughout Episode Four and never addressed as Obi-Wan in Chewbacca's presence. Leia never got an opportunity to explain her knowledge of General Kenobi to Chewie at that point, and wouldn't have felt it necessary since Chewie is not a General at this point; merely a smuggler.

Episode #1
If Dioxin is a nerve gas (and that what it seemed like) how could a jedi survive it by holding his or her breath?

If Naboo practiced the policy of keeping a decoy for their queen, why didn't they leave a decoy as queen on Naboo when Qui-Gonn and Obi-Wan tried to leave?

When fighting two against one, why don't Jedi Knights ever use the force to have one knight hold their opponent in place while the other knight slices and and dices?

Episode #2
If the Naboo are sophisticated enough to think of decoys, why do they rely on Jedis for their security?

When Boba Fett killed the mercenary with the toxic dart, why not try to kill Obi-Wan and Anakin as well?

In the amount of time is takes to use the force to dislodge a large piece of equipment to throw at someone, couldn't a trained jedi hit that same person with a force blast? I'm just saying.

Episode #3
How did Anakin and Padme hide their relationship from the Jedi council? The only person capable of hiding the force was Palpatine - did he show Anakin how to do the same without his knowledge?

Wouldn't Padme's unborn children be detectable through the force if they are also strong in the force?

Why didn't Anakin sense Obi-Wan as soon as he and Padme arrived on Mustafar?

Episode #4
If the Death Star could destroy planets, why didn't Governor Tarkin simply order the planet Yavin 4 destroyed? Wouldn't that have destroyed the moon as well?

Episode #5
No flaws here.

Episode #6
Doesn't Luke's plan at Jabba's palace seem a little too pat? If even one thing went wrong...

In terms of lifespan, what is twenty years to Yoda? Was he sick while living on that swamp planet?

Again, if the second Death star was fully operational, then why not destroy Endor?
