Well ... Here it is several months after this article was written. My point was should the Government force a American Automotive Manufacturers to increase miles per gallon in some or all models made in the U.S.. WELL, Detroit did it again, the BIG 3 posted their largest losses ever because of US Government invovlement, (bailouts) as opposed to making an honest profit. Making vehicles that get better mileage is a matter of survival in this whacky world economy. But as long as the consumer wants big gas hogs, Detroit will produce big GAS HOGS! It is and will never be illeagal to be stupid, greedy, and or selfish. This is the motis oppurendie or M/O of Corparate America. And if you make a poor quality substutues for foriegn models that excell in the MPG ring, AND the Federal Government will continually bail you out; coupled with a consumer market that loves its creature comforts! You will always have this dying lethargic beast cluttering the metaphorical conscience of the American Consumer.

YOU cannot legislate morailty and you cannot force a person to do the right thing because it is the right thing to do! I am still in the frame of mind that the answer is NO, However, the Government SHOULD pass legislation to mandate better fuel mileage. But the trick is not to pass legislation that will be hollow and unenforcable. The BIG 3 know they are going to be in business next year no matter what! If the BIG 3 fail then America is in the toilet in the Automotive Manufacturer business and millions of people would loose their jobs creating a massive down spiral in the world economy. Forcing them to do what is right is a poor substitute for honor and descency. They should do it because it is the right thing to do!

As world markets increase in quality and produce greater numbers, and the demand on crude oil becomes more violent in this already dangerous and unstable world economy why should American Cars be the last vestige of extreme waste and gluttony. If American Cars Manufacturers do not keep up with the world competition their markets will shrink and sooner of later they will become dependant on Government subsidising to keep them afloat. Then the taxes will need to be increased to compensate for the zero interest long term loans and or subsidising. Much like the US Rail System, which hasn't operated in the profit margin in a hundred years. Big business is careless and casual about their losses and those losses are passed on to consumers.
American Auto Manufacturers can
