Tips for parents raising twins and multiples

Twins and triplets make up roughly 2% of the world's population which makes them a special occurrence for parents. It may be a blessing to have multiples in your life, but it's also more work and more stress. Here are 10 ways to make multiple blessings more manageable.

1. Be organized. This doesn't mean you must have color-coded lists or a regimented schedule (though it works for some). It does mean setting up a routine that works for you. Talk to other moms of multiples, read books and try out their suggestions. Once you know your babies a good routine will develop. Not only does this help your day run more smoothly, but it will help caregivers and give you a better idea of when to plan outings or errands.

2. Ask for help. Two babies are a lot for anyone, and in the early months you'll need extra hands. Don't expect your needs to be met without asking and don't expect your spouse to read your mind. If you don't tell anyone you're struggling no one can help you. Conversely, don't be afraid to tell helpers you'd like them to do something differently (but don't be too picky or no one will help out).

3. Don't isolate yourself. Whether you're trying to keep your babies from getting RSV or outings are just too much hassle you may end up being home a lot in the early months. You need social interaction with others, so go for short neighborhood walks, ask friends to visit you, or invite a friend to help with your errands.

4. Find Support. While being with other moms is helpful, being with moms of multiples is an even bigger encouragement. They can offer tips, listen, and share twin stories that will make you laugh. The biggest encouragement though is knowing that others have survived the difficult times. The National Organization of Mothers of Twins has lists of local groups. You can also try BUTTA (Bringing Up Twins and Triplets Alone) for single parents of twins.

5. Take Care of Yourself. Mothers and fathers of multiples both suffer from stress. Stress can be brought on by physical exhaustion. Sleep when you can, even if it means a messy house. Eat well, even if you have to eat smaller, easier-to-prepare meals. Get exercise. Exercise give you more energy and makes you feel better. You might not have time for 30 minutes of aerobics, but take 10 minutes whenever you can. Take time for yourself everyday and try to get at least an hour a week to yourself. DON'T use your hour off for chores or errands.

6. Don't blame yourself or your partner. It can be easy to resent
