Enuresis: Symptoms and treatment

Many of you may be wondering what Enuresis is? It is the medical term for bed wetting. This disorder is involuntary urination in children that is older than 5 to 6 years of age. This may happen at any given time through out the day or night.

Their is only one symptom known for this disorder and it is involuntary urination. It mainly happens at least 2 to 3 times per month, at night time when the child is sleep. Children tend to have control over their bladder by a certain age but sometimes their could be a change in sleeping habits that would trigger Enuresis. This also seems to happen when the body produces more urine than the bladder can control. Their are some physical causes but they are very very rare. These consist of congenital malformations of the genitourinary tract, diabetes, and spinal cord lesions in the lower areas.

How do you treat Enuresis? There is no real cure but doctors may prescribe Desmopressin. This medication helps to control the bed wetting by reducing the amount of urine made. The main cure is to start making your child use the toilet before bed. Getting the child up through the night for toileting. Praise your child when he or she awakes dry.Reduce the amount of fluids the child may have a few hours before bed. The newest way to treat Enuresis is by using an alarm made just for bed-wetting. The alarm works when your child's badder get full it will sound off, awaking the parent and child for toileting times. This has been proved affective when used properly. This procedure can take up to 2 to 3 months to be successful. Don't get discouraged keep the training process going you will see results sooner than you imagined. Recent studies show that by using the alarm and prescription medication combined has the best results in the least amount of time. Also make a chart of the bed-wetting so the child can see his or her progress and this will make the child eager to quit and it will help the child stay focused.

Most children will continue to wet the bed until the age 10. About 10% of the children will get cured and never have that problem again. Just in case your child suffers from Enuresis I hope this has helped you.
