A soldier killed in Afghanistan
The news spills out over the screen
My heart it sank and fear began
As uncontrollable thoughts reigned.
My son, my boy, my pride and joy
Serving with his regiment over there
I can't take my eyes away from the news
It holds me captured within its glare.
Not knowing is the hardest thing
Heart racing fast with an anxious beat
News is slow, frustration builds as tears begin to well.
Standing lonely in my fear, longing to know, yet not!
Many hours pass by but still no more news is told
A glimmer of hope begins to surface and enfold
Each telephone ring, each doorbell chime
I jump with nerves so taut.
Finally the news imparts the full story
it was not my sons regiment after all!
My heat lifts with relief, and a slow tear falls
As I imagine the other mothers sadness, her boy after all.
