Believing in the power of affirmative action. Becoming actively involved in the causes, and issues you think is right is by far the most effective method. Grass roots political action through local political parties, neighborhood associations, religious organizations, or affirmative action groups are other effective methods in fighting for what you believe.
In Everett Washington, and throughout Snohomish County, leaders of neighborhood associations sometimes become either elected and/or appointed to City Council positions. Local political party leaders become state senators and Snohomish County Executives. Former college instructors and presidents become elected County and State officials.
Precinct Committee Officers attend political causes and conventions. They also become part of the Washington State's electoral college. They keep in contact with the local people in their precincts, and have been known to become appointed to vacant government offices and positions.
Most people have the tendency to complain about issues, and leave the resolutions to the news media and the politicians. However the media and politicians are seeking input from the general public. But, who wants to take up their valuable time and money using snail mail?
Not every one has access to the Internet or computers. Even people who do not subscribe to newspapers and magazines has access either through home delivery, or their public library.
1) Before submitting your letter to the editor, carefully read the guidelines. Most of them have word counts limited to one hundred to two hundred or even less depending upon availability of space. Do not rely upon the editorial staff to correct all of your typographical errors, be your own proof reader.
2) Do your homework. We always tell our children do your homework prior to watching television. Set a good example for your household by carefully following your own advice. If your family becomes interested in your cause, maybe your children can use it as a research paper, or an debating issue for their school.
Local television and radio stations frequently feature local people making a difference in community service and affirmative action. Sometimes local issues have a further reaching impact throughout your state and nation. Because the world is a global village, human rights issues and violations attracted international recognition and importance.
