It has been a question that has been asked and pondered for millenia. Do Soulmates Really Exist?
The dictionary defines a soul mate as : A person with whom one has a strong affinity.
The encyclopedia goes further in saying : Soulmate (or soul mate) is a term sometimes used to designate someone with whom one has a feeling of deep and natural affinity, friendship, love, sexuality, spirituality and/or compatibility.
Based on these definitions one would have to believe in the existence of a soul mate (or mates) in life if they have ever been involved in an intimate and loving relationship, be it for partnership, family, marriage or friendship. Ancient mythology tells us that humans once had four arms, four legs, and a single head with two faces. Out of fear, Zeus (The king of the ancient godds) split them in two, condemning them to spend the rest of their lives in search of their other half so they may once more feel complete.
It is this theory that may be responsible for so many questioning the theory or existence of soul mates; that we are destined to be with only one in our lives. That for many, is incomprehensible.
Of course, faith in the existence of the soul must also be considered. If one has no faith in the existence of a soul they cannot believe soul mates exist either.
I believe in the existence of the soul. I also believe each soul is but a very small piece of the greater whole. In conversations with friends who wish to understand what I believe where it pertains to the soul and the greater whole, I often use this example to simplify what can seem quite complex to some.
Imagine the ocean that covers a vast percentage of our world. Now imagine taking out one teaspoon of water. The ocean does not change or alter. That teaspoon is but part of the ocean, one very, very tiny part.
Now imagine if you will, that as we make our way as part of the whole that, for the most part, even through tremendous lengths of time as part of that ocean, our little teaspoon will not possibly touch and flow and interact with every other teaspoon of water within the ocean.
It makes sense to me that we would feel a natural affinity and connection with the other teaspoons of water that we have been more closely connected to in our journey.
I am usually then asked: "Would the ocean not eventually dry up if we continue to pull out one teaspoon at a time"? My response is always that as teaspoons are taken out, they are replaced with those who have finished their journey and returned to become part of the whole once more. It is kind of like evaporation and rain. Sometimes the weather becomes dry for extended amounts of time, but the ocean never dries up and the water eventually is replenished through rain.
I consider the ocean in my theory, the whole if you will, to be God. I consider the teaspoons to be our souls, part of the whole, yet now separate from the whole and unable to comprehend the whole.
I believe every person we have come to love, we are meant to love and grow and learn from. I know from experience that I feel an almost instantaneous connection with some I encounter in life, and no connection at all with others.
Fate, soul mates, twin souls or flames, all very ingrained within my belief system. Like anything else in life, if you believe they exist and there is purpose, meaning and growth to be garnered through that belief and connection, there will be.
Do souls mates exist? I guess that is another one of those mysteries in life we choose to believe in or not, but can never prove one way or the other.
