Was Judas a bad guy? Yes and no. Jesus needed to be betrayed so he could die for our sins. That being said, the following questions remain: how could someone who was a friend to Jesus betray him? How could someone lucky enough to view the miracles Jesus performed betray him? How could some one who was privileged enough to sit at the same table as Jesus betray him?
Greed is the ultimate issue that has controlled mankind from the beginning of time. Whether it is monetary greed, material greed, or the greed for self preservation, it is all the same and can be just as destructive to the morals of men and women. In the case of Judas, he was greedy for monetary wealth so when he was offered money, he had no problem in betraying Jesus with a kiss placed to his cheek. It wasn't until later that he realized what he had done and the guilt settled in. He compounded the betrayal by hanging himself which is also a sin. It is a sin to take the life god gave us.
This sort of betrayal will never end. According to the book of Revelation, there will come a time when we will not be able to buy or sell anything without the sign of the beast (666) attached to it. The bar code, which is now placed on everything purchased, is one way our goods can be labeled with the sign of the beast. This is scary because, when you become more knowledgeable in Christianity, what it means to be a Christian, and the responsibility involved in being a Christian, it is surprising how many times this number will actually appear before you.
It is stated plainly in the Bible that there will come a time when Christians will come under attack from those who wish to kill us. The only way of survival may be to deny our faith and allegiance to Jesus. But those who deny knowing Jesus in the personal sense of the word, so will Jesus deny knowing them.
Christians will need to decide if our faith and love for Jesus is greater than our desire for comfort. Will we be able to sacrifice our needs to remain faithful to Jesus? In the end we will have to deny ourselves food, material possessions, and life on earth. Are we up to the task or will we become a Judas?
We will have to be as courageous as that girl who was killed in the Columbine shooting. With a gun pointed to her face, she was asked if she was a Christian and she said, 'yes' which earned her a place at the right hand of Jesus.
I, personally, hope that I have the courage and strength to remain faithful to Jesus as he has remained faithful to us.
