MEMORIAL DAY BLUES

Today remains only one withered one
He lied his age to fight the Great War
And the eyes who stared the dictators down
Won't see many Memorial Days more

Some hear the call of the Washington wall
Still wake trembling, live their lives spliced
And wait in line at the VA hospital
While in Vietnam they still eat the same rice

The president's schedule says he must pause
today at the soldiers' cold graves
And preach about the great, noble cause,
and our way of life that they saved

For his war he'll save the best words
about keeping America free
But the president hasn't buried a son
and has friends in the gas industry

He sleeps sound though we are restless
in the American dream soldiers save
We pay more each day for this freedom
to which our lives are enslaved
