Vision of Love. Love Takes Time. Someday. Emotions. Dreamlover. Hero. Fantasy. Honey. My All. Thank God I Found You. Need I say more? Or you could already tie up these US Number One Singles to the artist's face and name. Yes! No doubt! These are just among the many hits from famous R&B artist, singer-songwriter, record producer and actress Mariah Carey.

Born on March 27, 1970 in Huntington, Long Island, New York, Mariah is among the very few whose vocal range can cover notes from alto to coloratura soprano. In high school, Mariah worked as a demo singer for local recording studios and earned the nickname "Mirage" from her high school classmates because she often misses school because of her work. She completed 500 hours of beauty school and after that worked as a backup singer for Brenda K. Starr. It was through Starr that Mariah had a big break when Starr gave Mariah's demo tape to Motolla when they met in a party. Tommy Motolla, now Mariah's ex-husband, was then very impressed with the demo tape and hunted her down to sign her up for his record label.

It was in 1990 that she released her debut album "Mariah Carey". Four singles from this album were chart hits and her debut single "Vision of Love" won her Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. When she released her second album "Emotions", she became the first artist to have her first five singles reach number one in the US Billboard 100 with the single "Emotions".

In 1993, Mariah married her producer Tommy Motolla. With Kenneth Babyface' Edmonds help, she released her next album entitled "Music Box". This album brought Mariah to worldwide popularity as she yielded her first UK Singles Chart number one. "Dreamlover" and "Hero" both topped the U.S. Charts as well. From here on, album after album has been a success.

Mariah separated from Motolla in 1997 and said that behind their seemingly happy relationship in the public's eye she had felt trapped in their marriage as Motolla is, as she described, controlling. After their divorce was finalized, she still continued writing and recording songs.

Her fifth album, "Daydream" is a mixture of the pop sensibilities of "Music Box" and a downbeat R&B and hiphop influences. This album has become one of the best-selling albums in the United States while a couple of its singles like "Fantasy" (debut at number one in the U.S.), "One Sweet Day" (held a record-breaking 16 weeks at number one) and "Always Be My Baby" (most successful in the U.S. radio
