Summer is finally here, and it's time to pick out some sizzling summer styles to accentuate the positive. Plus sized ladies are often tempted to live in tees and jeans or Capri pants, but it isn't necessary to sacrifice style in the warmer months. Okay, we've all seen the plus sized lady with the minus sized wardrobe, but let's meet somewhere in the middle, here. First, here are some basic principles to remember when shopping for your plus sized summer wardrobe:
Properly fitting garments is a must - number one perhaps - on the list of important things to remember when shopping for summer clothing.
Choose fabrics according to their utility and the care you are willing or able to put into them. Check the labels for hand washing or dry cleaning requirements prior to purchasing any garment.
Aim to purchase the entire summer wardrobe at one time. This helps to economize by being able to mix and match items making many different outfits from the same few pieces. Shopping from memory to match a summer blazer with the "perfect" under blouse can be a disaster if the length, neckline, sleeves or even color are to be considered. It's best to take it along, or purchase everything at once.
Don't forget accessories! Different choices in jewelry, hats, shoes, handbags, scarves and even belts can make a tired outfit seem new. (At least, to everyone else!)
It is recommended that you purchase trousers, blazers, blouses, skirts, dresses and even casual clothing such as shorts and Capri pants in traditional summer pastels. Save the bold colors for your accessories, and you will be able to purchase fewer pieces with more effect. Some colors and fabrics will transition to your winter and fall wardrobe, for economy's sake, but it is preferred to purchase summer wardrobe and winter wardrobe items separately.
Although trendy looks are more tempting in summer, it is also recommended that you stick with classic styling for your basic wardrobe and purchase trends to complement these basic pieces. Recommended summer fabrics are cotton, linen, rayon (light and cool, but require extra care), silk (dry cleaning recommended.) and poplin. Eyelet fabric, fabric with crinkling or pucker are very popular choices for summer chic. Stay away from heavy fabrics or fabrics that attract heat (and insects!)
If you wish to detract attention from a full figured midsection, accentuate the face, neckline or bust line with shirring, color, or even an attractive neckline cut. If full hips are the area that bothers you most, choose no waist trousers with a wide leg from hip line to ankle.
This is not to say that bigger is better. Many plus sized women fall into the pattern of purchasing and wearing garments that are one or two sizes too large for them. This actually makes you appear larger from other people's point of view. Remember, when trying on clothing, look at yourself IN THE MIRROR, and don't judge the look of the garment by how it looks as you look down to your feet. Happy summer shopping!
