wasn't always the whites, who put people into ethno racial groups. The African American community did this as well, if you remember back in the 60's when all the racial rioting was going on it gave rise to the slogan" Black Power'" (Hollinger) pg35.
As the decades passed in this country it was no longer acceptable to just be an ethno racial country. Comprising of just whites and non-whites, other elements came to light "including the gender-defined feminist movement" (Hollinger) pg 36. It wasn't till the 1980's that we became a nation of multiculturalism. "Multiculturalism focused on a list of five color-coded communities" (Hollinger) pg 36. No longer would we be referred to as Americans now "we are African Americans, Hispanic Americans, European Americans, Asian Americans, and American Indians."(Hollinger) pg 36, this went on into the 90's according to "Hollinger," but more changes lie in the very near future as well. His use of Tiger Woods was to show that change is imminent people no longer want to be told whom they are and they want to make their own choices. Tiger Woods merely expressed his idea of who he is. I am not saying I agree with this but now I better understand it. Now you can see the difference my attitude made in the two different readings of the same works. I believe because I was out of my comfort zone with this essay I subconscious reverted my mind back to a time when I was equally uncomfortable.
Because I was able to see and understand my own identity it allowed me to work through this issue, I now have a better understanding of my own identity. We can go through life trying to become who we want to but, we can never forget what we were once taught as children can rear its ugly head (in my case anyway)at anytime and I/we must beware of that. On the rare occasion, I go back home to visit family and friends I am constantly reminded of the narrowness I was raised up in, to this day most of them still think and act that way. I am grateful that I decided to move on when I did, even more grateful that I decided to further my role in society, and follow up on a level of higher education to help me better understand issues like this. One of my favorite quotes comes from a man called Zig Ziglar who said, "It's your attitude, not your aptitude that determines your altitude." and always remember to be who you want to be, not who everyone else wants you to be.
