What a person considers to be a vacation greatly depends on their everyday lifestyle. A vacation is supposed to be about getting away from your normal routine. It's about seeing and doing different things than you do day in and day out.
The type of vacation you choose also depends on how you want to spend your vacation time. If you see yourself lounging in a five star hotel, ringing for room service and waiting for the nightlife to get under way, then you probably wouldn't consider camping a vacation.
The people who do choose camping as their vacation get- away greatly enjoy the outdoors. You also have to resign yourself to the fact that camping, rather it's in a tent or a fancy RV is still work. There is no room service, or fancy dining room. Someone among you will still have to cook and clean up.
The amount of work to be done while camping depends on the type of camping you do. Tent camping can be a great adventure, or it can be a nightmare of unpleasant situations. Bugs, wild animals and uncooperative weather can mean disaster to an unsuspecting tent camper. On the other hand, a perfect camping spot, beautiful weather and a glimpse of creatures in their natural habitat can leave you with some very beautiful memories.
Many campers have opted for "self contained" RV's to fulfill their adventurous goals. Keep in mind that these must be either towed or driven to your camping spot. There will be work involved in setting them up, as well as setting up your camp site. "Self contained" means that these campers have holding tanks under them. All of your waste water is drained into these tanks, including the bathroom waste.
While this is very convenient and preferred to using public facilities for all of your hygiene needs, these tanks will need to be emptied at some point. All campgrounds and state parks have a public disposal tank for campers to empty their holding tanks into. This is one of the most necessary and undesirable chores of any camping trip.
By now you're probably thinking that camping certainly doesn't sound like a very good vacation at all. For those of us who are avid campers, all of the unpleasant work, is just a small part of the entire "package" of camping. Once all of the work of getting things in order is done, a feeling of peace and serenity settles over the entire campsite.
People who camp do so to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. They forget about alarm clocks and time schedules. Camping is a very slow paced vacation! The biggest
