Some of my favorite pieces for summer also happen to be the most convenient and easy to care for.
When shopping for key pieces I always take a look at the tag for the type of fabric and laundry requirements. Cotton is comfortable, it breathes, very easy to care for and eco friendly. Look for texture such as crinkle fabrics, polished cotton, jersey, terry, light denim and poplin weaves. Never over the silk and synthetics, you can sometimes find pieces that require no dry cleaning, breath, fit comfortably and are perfect for warmer weather.
Fit is everything, if things are too big, find a good seamstress to do alterations. It's better to buy things a little to big and have them altered than to look like a sausage or be too baggy.
I choose pieces that are interchangeable. Stick to the primary colors, red, yellow, green, and blue, augmented with black, tan, and YES, white. These colors are user friendly, and compliment most complexions, hair color and body types.
Prints and patterns are great as an accent; however, don't let them draw attention away from your face, a small waist or nice bust line. Small scattered patterns, simple pin stripes, or subtle plaids can be very flattering when used sparingly. If you are more fashion forward you can always choose a bold pattern top, but look for an empire waist, V or princess neck lines, which draw the eye upward, away from your stomach and hips.
Being a plus size woman I am very conscious how I look, and the way things fit my body. I have found that I can still be very comfortable and still look appropriate for any event with my simple wardrobe. Consisting mainly of cropped pants, simple A line, tee shirt, or wrap dresses, tanks, button up short sleeve or cap sleeve shirts, the possibilities are endless.
Shoes and jewelry can change any outfit from everyday basic, to a night on the town, so choose wisely. A tank with cropped pants can go from day to night and with a chunky necklace, kitten heal sandal, a short sleeve jacket or length summer weight cardigan, and a clutch purse. The same outfit can be played down by simply taking away the necklace, changing to a thong sandal, pull up your hair, and a cute little over the shoulder purse.
Remember to use texture, pops of color and look in the mirror before you leave the house. A simple rule to follow if you think you are over done is to take off one thing, less is usually more. Ladies we should never be afraid to feel & look beautiful, so have fun with the things you wear.
