Choosing a career is probably the most important decision you will make in your life. Choose the wrong one and you might end up miserable day in and day out. Some people have the mentality of just "going with the flow". This can get a person in trouble. While "going with the flow" is nice, you will most likely end up at a dead end job wishing you had made better decisions when it came to how you make your money. Here are a few important points to think about when choosing your career.
Don't choose a career based on money making potential alone. Most of us have the mentality of more is better. While having a lot of money is nice, it should not be the deciding factor when choosing a career. The old clich "more money more problems" is actually true to a certain point. You don't want the money aspect of a job to totally overtake you in the long run.
Don't let someone choose your career for you. What I mean by this is that you should choose what you want to do. Just because your family is made up of lawyers or contractors does not mean you are obligated to do that with your life as well. While this may cause some tension, in the long run you will be happier knowing you are the one who chose your career and someone else didn't do it for you.
Choose something that you can see yourself doing for a long time. You don't want to get stuck in a rut because you grow bored to easily with your chosen career path. If you are passionate about being a Doctor then you should definitely go into the field of medicine. On the other hand if your passion is fishing or building cars, then don't let anyone stand in your way. Just because your chosen career does not have the glam factor does not mean you should turn your back on it. If you want o fish then by all means, buy a boat and start a fishing company.
Lastly, always have a backup plan or two. While choosing your career is important, you may want to learn about other things as well. If you are like me and have a passion for several different things, then you should dabble in all of them. There is nothing that says just because you are a teacher you cannot also be a writer as well. Learn and study other trades. This can make the daily grind a little bit easier.
Choosing the right career can be difficult and frustrating. Thinking carefully about things and using some of these tips should help you come out with the right choice, and the right choice means you will be a much happier person.
