In fact, this books is give to every new mother in some local hospitals along with information about the importance of reading to children - great idea. It has simple text and pictures that encourage the ever stronger bond between mother and child.

Ages 7 - 10

Eight-year-old Susie has a mom in the U.S. Air Force. We get a look through her eyes of how military life works for her family and her mom. This is a great book for a child with a parent in the military or for a child to understand what it's like for so many that have parents in Iraq.

Ages 9-11

Janet Wong's gentle poems remind us of the eternal connections between mothers and children. In one touching poem a boy, having nothing to give, presents his mother with a rock on Mothers Day and she immediately finds a visible use for it. We are reminded that this is what Mothers do and how deep there love is at every moment.

The great lesson, for children, is that parents are real people outside of being a parent.

This is an excellent book for children that are going through the terrible twos or threes or fours Sara's mom comes up with a solution to her misbehaving. This book could open up talking between mother and child, during a calm time, to discuss the problem.

• My Mommy Wears Combat Boots - Sgt. 1st Class Sharon G. McBride
Ages: preschool

Sharon McBride wrote this book to explain to her daughter why she would be gone when she was deployed to Iraq. The original book was typed on her computer. She added hand sketches and had it bound at her local copy shop. Another great book for children with parents leaving for Iraq to help them deal with their emotions about the situation.
