In our ever growing collection of children's books, the books about Mom seem to be the most requested at bedtime. I've often wondered if my children get amusement at my many talents or if they are amazed that I can perform those talents with only two hands and a smile on my face. These are just a few that my children and I have come to enjoy.
31 USES FOR A MOM by Harriet Ziefert
This is one of our all time favorite books and it happens to be about Mom. Even though it is geared towards children, Moms will enjoy this book as much as children. Although Mom has many more uses than 31, this book will show some things moms do that children may not think about. The illustrations are enjoyable and the amusing story makes this book a fun read for everyone. Recommended age level 4-8.
LOVE, LIZZIE: Letters to a Military Mom by Lisa Tucker McElroy
I cannot recommend this book enough. Whether Mom is in the military or not, children will either relate to this topic or they will learn that sometimes Mom has a different role in the world. Whether it's Mom or Dad, this book helps children deal with separation from a parent and how a child can cope with this real life issue. Recommended age level 4-8.
IF MY MOM WERE AN OCTOPUS by Deborah Lemon
All Moms have said "if only I had another set of arms" and in this story about Harriet the Octopus, children will learn everything a mom does and how she juggles her many tasks. But even with eight arms, Mom still cannot manage everything and she must rely on her children to do some of the tasks themselves. Recommended age level 4-8.
MARS NEEDS MOMS! by Berkeley Breathed
This is an adorable story about a boy named Milo who goes on a journey to understand why he needs a mom. Milo begins his journey by not understanding why he needs a mom because he only sees the negative side like being sent to bed when he has misbehaved. Then one night, the Martians from Mars steal his mom and he learns why they would want her and why he really needs her. The story is heart-warming and teaches some valuable lessons. Children and parents will enjoy this humorous story. Recommended age level 4-8.
ARE YOU MY MOTHER? by P.D. Eastman
A classic tale from the Dr. Seuss series of books includes the story of a baby bird who falls from the nest and goes in search of his mother. The baby bird finds a kitten, a hen, a dog, and even a plane but none are his mother. After the long journey, the baby bird is relieved to be reunited with his mom and as the story goes, they live happily ever after.
MOM AND ME COOKBOOK by Annabel Karmel
I wanted to add this into my selection because through my sixteen years of parenting, the most enjoyable times I have shared with my children have been in the kitchen. Not only is cooking fun for children but there are many lessons to learn in the preparation of a dish. Children learn about measurements, nutrition and also the hard work that goes into preparing a meal. This book is a basic cookbook for those just starting out in the kitchen with simple recipes that kids will love to cook and eat. Recommended age level 4-8.
I truly believe that for children to appreciate the world (or people) around them, they need to understand how that object or person fits into their world. A child will never realize the importance of trees until we teach them what role that tree plays in their day to day life. The same can be applied to being a mom. Reading together can be very rewarding and what better way is there to teach our young children about what role we play then through books.
