Fears and foes surround them all
Not one is relieved
Serving well when duty calls
To honor their beliefs
United by a common bond
Encrypted from within
A Beckoning that calls beyond
The color of their skin
A duty cast to rouse the sense
Of all who stand to lose
A pittance for the honor due
The side for which you'll choose
Guarantees are far removed
And chances had are few
Death must call a roll his own
That may require you.
Time is short and nerves on end
The call to serve has rung
Caskets fill the open tombs
Of hero's left unsung
Letters fill the boxes now
And Flags all drape graves
We thank you for the destiny
And life your loved one gave
Widows raise their children now
Mothers bury sons
How much difference does it make?
Who really lost or won?
The life they gave has taken toll
And tears replace the laughter
How much better did things get
When woke the morning after
Judgment plays a bitter role
Decisions have been made
Can honor truly cover blood?
By giving them a day?
Be real leaders, honor vets
By giving them their due
Give them back a life to live
They lost theirs serving you
City streets are littered now.
Expectations never met
So many of the homeless there
Are surviving U.S. vets.
So when you pass them have a heart
Give a darn or two
That hungry homeless dirty bum
Has risked his life for you.

Poetry: A soldier's tale
by Ed Coet
DISTANT WARRIOR
I get this wondrous chill as night falls
in mountains or desert sand
and I find myself dreaming about
home,
The drums call out to me
On the distant horizon
I cannot help but be drawn to them
They lead me to my fate
Do I really want
Mama's boy they laughed and teased
Son don't worry time will come when this will cease
She kissed his skinned knee and his
"Daddy’s Boots"
Little girl in the mirror
In your mother’s shoes
And in your daddy’s green hat
Little girl
I am a Soldier on the battle field
Today I killed for the first time
I took away a life to save another and myself
Its kill
