More than any other people in the world today, American Christians are obsessed with the end of times, as foretold by Biblical prophecy. The movies, the documentaries and the media constantly barrage us with doomsday predictions. Faced with the responsibility of electing a new national leader this year, there are those that would connect the timing of the election and the character of the candidates with these prophecies.
What are some of the reasons for this? Certainly, the world has changed dramatically since we entered the new millennium. Our nation's adventurism in the Middle East has mired our military in inter-faith warfare with no end in sight. The threat of Iraq and Afghanistan erupting into global warfare with nuclear weapons being deployed is a horrific thought.
For hundreds of years now, Islam has been a religion at war with itself, a war of ideology, slowly consuming the Islamic nations and threatening to engulf the world in violence. Yet, Islam is both a peaceful and a powerful religion practiced by many more Muslims than Christians or Jews combined. Among the root causes of the problems we are experiencing are the clash between fundamentalist Islamic cultural values and the pluralism of American society, which is mimicked by an increasing number of newly affluent nations. Some believe that the unavoidable outcome will be an apocalyptic war, the end of times.
The election of a new American President in 2008 will be a significant event in the next decade of this misunderstood war, as whoever is elected, he or she will be faced with the responsibility for retreating, maintaining, or escalating the engagement of America's military resources. Our current proclaimed solution, to spread Democracy and let it generate peace and equality, is at the heart of the problem, a problem we created and must take ultimately responsibility for, even if out of ignorance.
For most Americans, the newly elected president will ideally strive for a peaceful conclusion and not an escalation or a long-term regional commitment. A phrase with overtones from a time in the not so distant past, Peace with Honor, may make its way back into the popular vocabulary soon. Ideally, the biblical signs of the end of times and the prophecies of world war in the Middle East will be avoided. Nevertheless, we do have a military presence in several different locations over there in force. Additionally, we will always be faced with the constant effort to destroy the Holy Land and Israel
