It could be a very daunting experience to buy a mountain bike. There can be many doubts while selecting the right mountain bike, like do you want front suspension or full suspension. Does it comfortably fit your budget?
There are few things to keep in mind for a quality mountain bike.
1. Price - You should decide how much money you are willing to spend. If you are buying a mountain bike for racing purpose, you may need a better (i.e. more expensive) bike than the one used for recreational purposes. Trying to buy a bargain bike will cost more in the end. Buy your bike from a reputable bike retailer with a life-time warranty on the frame. Though components are not usually covered by the manufacturer but some bike shops give some limited guarantee on the entire purchase.
2. Frame - While buying a mountain bike, the most important thing to keep in mind is the frame. Avoid bikes made of steel or high tensile steel. They are of poor quality and outrageously heavy. Crom-oly ( a mixture of steel, chromium and molybdenum) is a reasonable alternative for beginner mountain bikers. It is light and stronger. Titanium frames have come down in price to be affordable to most bikers. Many full-suspension bikes are made up of hollow tubes of carbon fiber. These can be fatally damaged by rocks or tough spills resulting in complete frame failure.
3. Suspenion - Another most important thing is the suspension. Never consider purchasing a mountain bike without some form of suspension. Without front suspension, your bike and your body will experience extreme vibrations, resulting in possible wheel failure and rider discomfort. Front suspension bikes are easier to control than a rigid bike (a bike without suspension) and are simpler to maintain than a full suspension bike.
4. Bike fit - Bike fit is another important aspect while buying a mountain bike. Some riders prefer to ride more upright, taking some of the stress off the neck and shoulders. Some riders prefer to ride lower with more control and better streamlining.
5. Seat - The seats come in many shapes and sizes, and you must find the best one to fit in right. Seat posts can be upgraded for taller and heavier riders. The nose of the seat can be thin or fat depending on your preference. Manufacturers claim that a split nose on the newer higher priced seats put less pressure on the blood vessel in the scrotum of male riders. This will reduce the risks of ailments such as testicular cancer.
6. Brake - There are two systems of brakes
