Strategies for getting the most out of summer vacation time

Just because it is summertime and your kids are not in school, does not mean that your kids need to stop learning and using their brain. Getting your kids involved in reading during the summer is an excellent way to keep their mind sharp and ready to go, when it is time to go back to school in the fall. When kids leave school in the summer and return in the fall, they are bound to forget skills that they have learned, because they are not exercising their brain as much. Reading is a great way to exercise their mind. Just like exercising any other body part, you have to use it to make it stronger.

Summer is the one time during the year that a child can read any book that they wish and not have to read something that they are not interested in for school. If you give your kids a list of books that may interests them and let them choose their own selections from the library, they will most likely be more enthusiastic about reading. If you have a son who loves sports, research books for his age that involve stories about sports. It is easy to find books written about a wide variety of topics, and your kid is bound to be interested in some of them.

Back when you were a kid, you probably had several books that you read and loved. Share those books with your kid. When your kid has read the book, you can actually sit down with them and talk about the book. This is also a great way to spend some time with your kid. There are many classics that do not get read today in schools and you can be the person that gets to share the book with your kid. Some classic books you can suggest are:
The Little House On The Prairie books
Swiss Family Robinson
Secret Garden
Wind in the Willows
Days With Frog and Toad (younger kids)
The Black Stallion
The Jungle Book
The Chronicles of Narnia
Anne of Green Gables
The Phantom Tollbooth (this was actually one of my favorite as a kid)

A way that you can sneak in some summer reading for your kids, is prepare them for any vacation that you will be taking that summer. Get some books from the library on the destination spot for your family. If you are going to Yellowstone Park, get books on the history of Yellowstone Park and have your kids read them. It will get them excited about the vacation and they can learn some important facts about different places.

Anyway you look at it, your kid needs to read over summertime. Encourage them to pick up a book. If they see you reading, they may get more interested in it themselves. Keep them away from the television and give them a good book to lose themselves in.
