Christian eschatology: Will the upcoming US presidential election signify any end time events?

This is an interesting question to ponder, but we need to remember that we have been commanded not to concern ourselves too much with "the day and the hour." As Jesus said, only the Father knows and I believe that any reasonable person of any faith would agree with this.

But, we are human and it is only natural to wonder about end times and the end of the world, especially given the dangerous times we live in. Modern day technology is a marvelous, but frightening, thing and one can easily see and understand how the world may be destroyed by the hand of man.

But, back to our question: no, I do not really believe this presidential election has any special significance regarding the end times. At least, it has none that I can see. I see a greater social significance as in 2009, we will swear into office either the oldest person to take office, a female, or a black male. Any one of the three major contenders will bring his/her uniqueness into office and the effect upon society will be interesting to see. In and of itself; I do not see any of the major candidates fulfilling any sort of prophecy or bringing to the table the radical politics which frighten us into thinking about such things as the end times.

But, it is important to remember that, in this fast-paced world, what seems true today can change at a moment's notice. I wonder what George Bush would have thought, had he known on his first inauguration day, that just a few months into his initial term in office the events of 911 would change his presidency entirely, and that the changes would be radical and permanent. No doubt he would have apprehensive and, quite possibly, frightened.

Another interesting thing to ponder is the 2000 presidential election. Given the aftermath of 911, what would the state of the world be today if we were finishing the Gore era instead of the Bush era? We don't know and that is the point: prophecy can only be affirmed or rejected by analyzing actual events in hindsight, not by "what if" questioning and brainstorming. If the 2008 election does have significance to the end times, it will be many years before we will realize it; many years before it can be judged by historians. If the end is nearer than we like to think today, we may not be around long enough to accurately judge the 2008 president elect and his/her presidency.

I am not a qualified historian by anybody's standard, but it seems obvious to me that the pace of life increased greatly in the 20th century, in large part because of the advances in technology. It does not seem unreasonable at all to think that we may look back in a few years and see that the presidential election of 2008 did indeed have some prophetic impact on the affairs of man. But, again, we don't really know and it is not for us to know.

Only God knows and that is enough for me. You too, I hope.
