This is an excerpt of my novel, Her Confession. It is a romantic tragedy and this is near the climax of the story. The woman is narrating and she had to run away from her abusive boyfriend. He threatened to kill her the last time they saw each other and he did not know she was pregnant with his child when she escaped from him.
I was lying in bed sleeping soundly. It was quiet; all I could hear was the whirring of the fan; but then I heard, "Sh" I thought my heart would stop. I felt him there before I opened my eyes and yet to open them made the nightmare a reality. Standing at the foot of my bed holding Simone Li was none other that Rodrigo. My breath was caught in my throat. He looked up from the baby and our eyes met. I was paralyzed wit fear. I wanted to wake up but I was not dreaming. Furthermore this was worse than any dream I'd imagined. He'd entered my home as I slept. All my fake I.D., all my preparation, all my disguises, my self defense training and study it all meant nothing at this moment. "I" I attempted to speak but he cut me off saying, "Sh" he put his finger to his lips. He whispered, "She's falling back asleep." Time stood still for me. My heart raced. I had no idea how I would get out of this situation. I had our two-month-old daughter to protect now. He laid her down gently in the bassinet and made his way over to the bed. "I am amazed. I thought I was coming to get my girl and now I find I got two girls," he whispered. I stared at him warily. I was sitting up in the bed wearing a flimsy tank top and panties, with my knees drawn up to my chest defensively. My hair was up in a messed ponytail. "You know why I came here Shar?" he asked as he drew nearer the bed. I just shook my head. "To get what's mine and I don't mean the truck or the engagement ring or even the money, I mean you." He was so close I could feel his breath on my neck. He took the ponytail holder out of my hair and I protested, "Don't" I tried to scoot away but the moment I heard the clicking sound of the gun cocking back I froze. "You always make it so hard for yourself Shara," he said. Silent tears rolled down my cheeks. "God, how I missed your stubborn ass," he sighed smelling my hair. I trembled at his touch, but did not resist for fear of the gun he pointed at my head with one hand while he undressed me with the other. It's ironic how when I'd left him I grieved the loss of his lovemaking. For months my body had yearned for him. Now I loathed every touch of his fingertips. He'd been surprisingly tender and gentle at first, kissing and touching me almost reverently. But once he forced himself inside me it felt like the assault he'd meant it to be; like the beginning of my punishment. I was in such pain I could think of nothing but survival. I tried to separate my mind from my body, which was not under my own control. I feared he would kill me this way; the barrel of the gun pressed against my temple. Finally once I felt practically numb he tired himself out. He slid off to my side and pulled me against him. There we were in our familiar position again. Lying on our side with him behind me, his arms tightly wound around my waist. I did not see what he'd done with the gun. I prayed in my mind. Prayed for a way out. I made all sorts of promises with God. Please Lord get me out of this. I'll be forever grateful'. Hours passed. The sun crept over the horizon. I don't think I'd slept at all. I knew I would not be able to wriggle free as he slept. I knew he was beyond angry and that his gun showed his seriousness. I couldn't imagine a way out but I was alert and ready looking for the answer.
