One of the main things to consider when emailing digital photos is the size of the photos. Large photos (close to 1 MB or larger) can cause difficulty for the recipient when trying to open the e-mail or the photos. Often times, large photo sizes can hinder the email from getting to the recipient.
As an engineer, I have had many opportunities to send and receive digital photos of site conditions from both clients and subcontractors. Handling large batches of huge photos via email can suck critical time from a fast-track project.
I recommend that before photos are E-mailed that the following procedure be followed:
1) Crop out any aspect of the photo that does not pertain to the content you are trying to convey. Cropping the photo will reduce the size of the photo and will (more-or-less) highlight the information you wish to transmit.
2) Resize the photo (if necessary) using an easy image viewing program such as IRFANVIEW, which can be downloaded at www.irfanview.com. At optimum, the photo size should be no more than 800 x 600 pixels (unless there is a reason to send a larger photo). If possible, reduce the photo size to 640 x 480 pixels.
3) Use jpeg file format. Jpeg files seem to transmit with the best results.
4) Before attaching the photo files to the email, ask the recipient if their email server places any requirements on email file size. If so, you may want to send just a few photos at a time in separate emails rather than attaching them all to the same email.
