Summertime was always my favorite season, not only because it is nice and warm to play outside, but because we were out of school for summer vacation. As I am now a mother and see my children enjoying summertime it is rewarding just to watch them. With so many great books out there for children it is wonderful to find ones that match the time of year. I love to read to my children and encourage them to learn to read.
While not all of these books talk about summertime itself, you can see through the pages of the book it is nice, warm and beautiful outside. These books embrace summer in their own way. Here are some of our favorite summertime stories.
A SUMMERTIME SONG - AUTHOR - IRENE HAAS
This is by far one of my children's favorite summertime books. It is so pretty and well written. It embodies animals, summertime and is so fun for children. This story is often requested for me to read by my children. Very fun for both children and adults. It is about Lucy, who is invited to a birthday party.
As she tries to get to the birthday party many things happen until she happily reaches her destination. The pictures are beautifully painted by the author herself. This book get five stars!
IT'S SUMMERTIME! - AUTHOR - ELAINE W. GOOD
This fun story is about a child who is living and growing up on a farm. The child is happy it is summertime and he knows it is summertime because of the strawberry patches being all nice and ready. Throughout the story the boy learns about all the greatness summer has to offer. Very cute story about summertime.
THE GARDEN OF ABDUL GASAZI - AUTHOR - CHRIS VAN ALLSBURG
I love this story and my children do as well. It is about a young boy, Alan, who is left in charge of Miss Hester's mischievous dog named Fritz. He agrees to take care of the dog not knowing how hard it will be. One day while taking Fritz out for a walk, Fritz breaks free from his leash and ends up on the yard of Abdul Gasazi. Abdul Gasazi does not like dogs what so ever. Abdul Gasazi, is a retired magician, who turns Fritz into a duck, so Alan thinks.
It is a very fun book which has nice pictures and will get your child involved. As it shows plenty of outdoorsy pictures it reminds me of summertime.
ONE HOT SUMMER DAY - AUTHOR - NINA CREWS
This story is about a young girl who tries to fins something to do on a hot summer day. She starts by trying to fry an egg on the sidewalk, but it not quit hot enough for that. Then she goes to the park where she realizes it is to hot to sit on the swings. She goes on until she finds the perfect thing to do on the hot summer day.
I love the pictures in this book as it is also done by the author Nina Crews. My young children love this story and can relate to the character as she finds something to do in the city where it hot.
DOGGONE LEMONADE STAND! - AUTHOR - JUDY BRADBURY
Summer and lemonade go together very well and I love reading this great story to my children. It is based on a young boy named Christopher who opens up a lemonade stand. Not only is this book a great collectible book, but it includes using math and will captive children.
LUCY'S SUMMER - AUTHOR - DONALD HALL
It is 1910 and the little girl Lucy, who is growing up on the families New Hampshire farm. Her mom has opened a store where she has to go to Boston to get supplies. Lucy accompanies her and spends the day shopping and enjoying the day with her mother there. This story is very cute for children and will show them how it was back in 1910.
