The workplace contains many types of people who all use different strategies or methods to gain an advantage on the job. Those who feel obligated to out-perform others will try to prove their worthiness excessively. When I think of "Sucking up at work" I envision a worker making a fool of herself by demonstrating her job dedication and while trying to win the compassion of her boss. Some people go to much further extremes to impress. Still, though, the range of methods used to get ahead at work is wide.
Butt kissers, people which extend beyond others to gain job respect by many impractical situations, are annoying. They have an impeccable ability to showboat any "extra mile effort" they took the liberty to do, or their latest idea about who knows what. Surely these strategies are played out past cliche status, and most superiors can smell them around the corner. Bringing in food that you remembered your boss commenting on as his favorite pasta dish cannot gain a person an edge on the job. You will satisfy his appetite, but still have gotten no work done as you two had lunch together the last hour. Sounds unproductive, right?
The strategy towards job advancement can often be short-cutted, with the right moves. Suave, smooth, golden. These words describe the general idea of someone who knows the rights and lefts through the workplace maze. Rather than risk embarrassment and then further loss of dignity, a smooth worker will display her charisma, energy, dedication, and ability all the time. With a reputation for being as reliable as an '88 Ford pickup, she can earn the advancement she wishes. Her attitude is golden, and she always takes the overtime if it presents itself. She does not conflict with co-workers. Her qualities are solid and her history is brilliant, that is why she will earn advancement and open her life up to many more possibilities.
Generally, the workforce is a free market competition. It's a dog eat dog day today, and you had better come hungry. Most times, the loudest barker will not get fed first. To be successful, no real kissing up is necessary. Simply stated, it's the qualities you bring every shift, not the chocolate, that keeps your bosses wanting you back. Humorous are the people who do embarrassing tactics to keep the attention on them. Foolish are those that believe in such efforts. Follow my advice; To gain respect from your superiors at work, do not kiss up. Just prove yourself and your abilities. Show them what you've got.
