Financial priorities during a job transition: Save money or pay off debt?

Financial Priorities During Job Transition

In Every aspect of life, every route that is traveled has its own balance. This is also true with finances while holding a job or not. Job transitions however make things especially difficult. One should always try to prepare for these sorts of things, even if not expected. Saving is the best way to go about preparing for the worst. And even if one is caught off guard there are ways to cut back and make it through, unfortunately it is not easy.

In order to prepare one needs to be dedicated and expect the worst, while simultaneously hoping for the best. One of the best ways to prepare is to save and be ready. Make a budget, a simple spending plan, and balance out necessities and occasional splurges. Make some adjustments to the budget and allow for a little to be put aside. Next take a little each month and put it aside into a SEPARATE savings account, separate because if it is in a main account it is much easier to spend. Try to put away at least a months salary make an honest attempt for three, this may take time, but all things do. With this simple plan one can prepare for a sudden lay-off or a surprise injury.

Unfortunately too many times the worst happens and our savings are not adequit for the time that it needs to span. I would advise anyone who is currently out of work to follow this plan. First and foremost cut out anything not necessary such as eating out. Eating out runs around twenty dollars for a fast food family meal, yet you can get a healthier, more filling, and cheaper meal if you grocery shop. In this case your family will be fed for approximately five dollars, this is very possible, even three dollar meals are possible. Make sure that the cable or satellite TV is first to go as this will save you right around fifty dollars a month. If you have a teen in the home and they love their phone but run the bill, the do exactly as the commercials that you hopefully are not getting anymore tell you, get them a pre-paid. Put a set amount on it per month and discuss it with your Teen so that they understand, this not only saves you cash you need but teaches your child money/minute managing techniques. And with these actions now you have a little room to ask yourself "save or bills?" This is now a bit more simple as you have rid yourself of some of those cumbersome bills already. Just pay the monthly bills, if you do not stay aware of the months ahead then you will be in real trouble. If you simply cannot pay a bill then call the company and let them know what is going on, many times companies will understand, and some will defer payments giving you extra time. So when it comes right down to it if you are in the middle of jobs save money, you have no income to back up the choice of paying off debt, and if another job does not come soon you will be in a bit of a bind.

Overall it is important to be ready for the unexpected. It is also a wonderful idea to stay debt free if at all possible. Overall if you follow these instructions you should be fine and make it through. A wise man once said after all "hope for the best, prepare for the worst."
