Freshman Year
"Keep that bawling brat quiet, will ya?" yelled Mona in a voice hoarse from a pack a day habit. "If you can't keep her quiet, you can both just get out o' here. I've had it with that kid. You call that baby's daddy and tell him to get his tale over here and take her for a while. He and his rich uppity parents ought to do their share of taking care of this baby."
Mel sat motionless. She hadn't yet told her mom that Greg had left town. The last time she'd called him his mother said he was gone, but she wouldn't say where. Mel was so confused and hurt. How could something that started out so beautiful have turned so ugly?
Freshman year had started out so fun and exciting, and when Greg, the coolest senior, had started talking to her and inviting her to lunch with his friends, she was beyond flattered.. Her algebra I teacher Ms. "Dragon lady" Sealy had warned her to stay away from seniors. "They just see you as fresh meat." was her rude comment. Adults, especially teachers just don't get it. Mel had thought resentfully. Thank goodness the comment didn't discourage Greg.
They began dating regularly, holding hands walking down the hall to class, and sneaking a kiss when the teacher on duty wasn't looking (no pda you know). Then there had been that night when they were kissing and his hands started up her shirt. She had been startled, scared even, but he had apologized and explained it was hard to keep his hands off her because he cared for her so much. Before too long he used the "L" word. Of course she believed him. She had faith he would always care about her and love her.
Eventually Mel was no longer frightened when Greg touched her. She began to look forward to their make out sessions. She'd never felt this way about anyone else. She knew she loved him. Then it happened. They...she hadn't intended to do "it", but they couldn't stop. After that night it became a regular thing. Greg became more possessive. She was his. Mel liked that. It made her feel special and loved. He only had eyes for her.
Christmas was approaching and she and her friend Amy were debating about what Greg would get Mel, probably jewelry. In the middle of the conversation Amy groaned complaining about her cramps. With a start, Mel realized she hadn't had her period in well over a month. In a fit of panic she blurted out the news flash to her friend Amy. They both froze.
"Oh my God," whispered Amy. "You don't think you might be... pregnant?"
In that moment even without a pregnancy
