Lakes of the Ozarks is a favorite vacation destination of mine, although it has been several years since I have been there. This series of lakes was formed when the Bagnell Dam was created. It is located in the middle of the state of Missouri which just happens to be the home state of the newest American Idol, David Cook. But that is not the only claim to fame for this area. We normally visit the eastern side of the Lakes as there seems to be more of a variety of attractions.
There are so many attractions and things to do on this side of the Lakes, that I don't really know where to begin. So I will share with you some of the little known places that my family has found over the years - mostly just by accident. On one vacation, we were caught in a rain storm, had all been crowded in the car for much too long and were all ready for a break. That is when we found Miner Mike's and Buster's Indoor Fun Center. Now, the first question you are asking is why go to an indoor fun center when you are at a lake, well any port in a storm and we all needed a break. This play center was such a hit with us, that after eating and a few beers, we ended up staying there all afternoon, playing video games, riding the Runaway Mine Train, and enjoying the high tech games. Now every vacation to the Lakes of the Ozarks has a day planned to spend with Miner Mike and his Mule Buster. You can call for further information to 573-348-2126.
Since I am the caver of the family, we always have to spend a day or two visiting the caves that are in the area. These caves were discovered by the Osage Indians, years before the area had the Lakes and are part of the heritage and natural wonders of the Ozark Mountains.
My favorite cave is the Bridal Cave at Thunder Mountain Park. Legend has it that this was the place for Indian Wedding ceremonies during the late 1700's to the early 1800's. The cave still offers wedding ceremonies to any bride and groom in the Bridal Chapel at the caverns. But if you want to have your wedding ceremony at this unique spot, you will need to make reservations. You can call for further information to 573-346-2676.
Another attraction to visit in this area, are the different wineries - you didn't know there were wineries in this area! But - yes, there are, in fact some rather well known wineries. My favorite winery is the Grey Bear Vineyards and Winery near Stover, Missouri. This winery is unique because of the winery's 20-side, round building. There are rustic cabins for rent if you want to hunt or fish and be away from the crowds that can be at other areas of the Lakes. For further information on this winery, you can call 573-377-4313
Now, if you add these attractions to the three state parks, beaches, boating and swimming areas, you will see that this is a unique vacation spot for everyone in your family. So, why not plan a family vacation to this area this summer - it's never too soon!
