cheap ($35 -$65 per night) and eat at roadside diner's or local cafe home-style cookin' places (average meal per person $6). We have taken 2 day trips on old Route 66, the Spanish Old Fort road-trip on Highway 82 is historical and beautiful, the Galveston to Quannah Highway 6 route is one of our favorites and Highway 259 in Oklahoma is a nature adorned highway journey that takes you to some great camping and whitewater spots. A car exploration trip the whole family will enjoy.
4. ESCAPE THE CONCRETE JUNGLE TAKE NATURE SOJOURNS
Weekend nature explorations are inexpensive and great for the entire family. The state parks across America offer really awesome things to do and see, while not costing a fortune. Rent cabin or stay in a lodge and watch for off season rates, they are extremely reasonable ( $55 per night to $185 per night rates on average, during their off season) and some rooms/cabins allow 4-6 people. You can get to these great parks by car or air. There are many ski lodges around Grand Canyon Parks that offer great off season rates for a weekend and there are some great weekend ski packages out there presently.
5. NON-TRADITIONAL 2 - 3 DAY TRIPS TO .........
This year we are doing bizarre weekend vacations based on the theme of towns with strange names. We are plotting out our driving course based on visiting some small towns with really strange names. Using the Zip Codes we organize the car trips according to the roads that connect the towns in a circle leading us back home within 3 days! We have planned a journey to visit towns with really strange names like Noodle, Smiley, Tarzan, Bigfoot, Hogeye and Kickapoo! Using simple geometry and r x d divided by time we plot our course and also determine the gas cost of our travel, in order to keep within our $500 travel budget!
We are also watching cheap flight websites for weekend getaways to cities around Canada and Central America that are not Tourist Traps. Out of the way places where the local culture is still the attraction for a low cost. Look for flights to Alberta, Canada and weekend getaways to Costa Rica and its village beaches.
This is the time of economical travel, so take advantage of weekend trips to places offering bargain rate packages and inexpensive hotels, flights and lots of coupons for local eateries. Weekend getaways are affordable and revitalize the soul with a change of pace and scenery.
