Homophobia: My views

I attend a church in the Washington, DC area. This week we will have a homosexual group, who opposes our pastor for his stance on homosexuality and homosexual marriage, coming to our church. The pastor had the choice of rejecting or ignoring them or inviting them in and treating them with respect, even though he disagrees with their moral and spiritual stand. I thank God he choose to act like Jesus and not like a Pharisee. (For those of you who don't know the Pharisees in the bible were the highest Jewish religious sect. They were strict legalist and felt they were more "righteous" than any one else. Read the book of Matthew for more information on them.) So anyway, this got me to thinking about my feelings toward the homosexual community. How should I treat people who say they are homosexual? I believe the bible teaches this is an immoral and ungodly lifestyle. I believe it is sinful, but so are a lot of things. Like adultery, (having sex with another man or woman's wife or husband) or fornication (an old English word which basically means having sex outside of marriage). But why does this one sin get so much attention, and why is it that if I disagree with that life, I am labeled in our current society as a homophobic. Well that got me to thinking, what is a homophobic or what makes someone "homophobic". I decided to dissect the word itself and try to discover the etymology of the word. So here goes my attempt to understand this word.

According to Dictionary.com the word homophobia is; "an unreasoning fear or antipathy towards homosexuals and homosexuality." So do I have an unreasoning fear towards homosexuals. I don't fear them. I am not afraid of people. I don't fear their behavior. I don't want to participate in their behavior but I don't fear it either. So is it my desire not to participate with them in their sexual behavior that makes me a "homophobic" person. Let me examine the second part of this definition; "antipathy towards homosexuals". Do I feel this way. Antipathy is the opposite of sympathy. So am I un-sympathetic towards those who choose to have sex with a partner of the same sex. Well, no, I don't think I am un-sympathetic, I just feel its not good to do this. I think it's morally wrong, just like I think its morally wrong for a child molester to have sex with children, or a bank robber to steal, or a man to have sex outside of marriage, or any of a number of other things that go against my belief in right or wrong. So why does my feeling this
