Poetry: My personal quirks

by Derek Huang

Created on: May 22, 2008

I'm one of those people
You see walking down the hallway, neck bent, gaze grazing the ground
Tapping an infectious beat against a Pre-calc book
Bopping his head to a song only he hears, and you know he laughs
At the people whining about the no-ipods-in-school rule
While living his music, through invisible headphones, embedded in his mind

I'm one of those people
With that distant look in both eyes, seeming lost in focus
And is visibly jarred, when people say "Hi", as if
Bungie cords have snapped him back up to solid earth
He says "Hello" back, in a cheery, but shallow tone
Thoughts still crawling back to his own private cove

I'm one of those people
The telemarketers loathe to call, knowing a time-sucking dialogue awaits
Because every night he ponders a new question with no answer
And delights in it's sheer paradoxity, yet when he speaks
It always sounds like he's in a debate round
A round with no winner, driftwood ideas and
Tangents to curves of curiosity

I'm one of those people
And I'm one of a kind
