Women and fishing

Fishing women are numbered much higher than some people might think. The truth is, if you take a look at the world wide picture, of who is out there fishing, you would find that women number as many or, more than the male gender. It is a fact that in many countries other than the USA, women do most of the fishing. This is because they are fishing for a living.

Now in the USA we tend to view fishing as a sport and, or a leisure activity. We think of it as a hobby and tend to forget that people living elsewhere, in the world, depend on fishing to feed their families. Some people also fish as a way to produce much needed financial income. Many tribes and cultures throughout the world leave this work to the women.

Now in the USA because fishing has a stigma attached to it that concerns smelly fish and, bloody bait and, butchering the catch, we have given this over to the male gender. We are supposedly a refined and educated lot, in the sense that women are not suppose to dirty their hands with such vile chores. The thing is that men figured out a long time ago, just how much fun and excitement a good day of fishing can be and it would seem that they have spent years trying to hoard all the fun for themselves.

Yes it can be work. When it comes time to launch the boat or pack the equipment down a steep ravine, to a promising fishing hole but, all the work involved, is well worth the effort. Yes it can be a little gross, when it comes time to clean the catch but, it can also be rewarding, in ways that are far from, what goes on the dinner table. What fish are eating and what they will bite on for bait, is a lesson in nature, to say the least. How much time it takes to hike a trail or drive a boat across the water is a lesson in living amongst the elements. There is so much education going on to those who take notice while they are outdoors that each fishing trip could be considered a field trip for education.

Fishing is not unique to the male gender, it never has been and it never will be. Women are out on the water as I write this and, they are fishing. They fish for fun, they fish for profit and they fish for survival, but the bottom line is that women fish. I am a women and I love to fish. My friends fish too, and they too are women. Fishing is not a male dominated past time even though it may appear that way.

Today in the USA there are many professional anglers coming up in the ranks who have names like "TERRI", female. They are pros. They compete for prize money just like the big boys. No the prizes are not as large and the competitions are not as covered by the sporting news media but it is happening. Women in the USA arenot staying home with the children while hubby goes fishing with the guys. Women want to go along. They want to share in the fun of fishing. this sport that is fun, relaxing and rewarding.
