A DIALOUGE ON LOVE
"Forever was shorter than I had imagined," he said sarcastically, as the door shut into his face. This wasn't the first time. Jeremy had been down this road before, the more you push commitment the harder the door shuts in your face. He was tired. Too tired to run, not this time, he wouldn't let himself. After pacing laps around a small Upper East Side apartment drinking tea and listening to Lightin Hopkins telling him the follies of love, he was almost back to normal. He noticed that, after the fifth door shut in his face, the sting had decreased at the same rate: almost five fold. He called the best girl friend, emphasis on friend, he ever had. "Again? Again! Listen to me very carefully: you cannot LOVE every girl you fall for. The difference between lust and love seems lost on you, and you are really devaluing the word love for the rest of us" she exclaimed. "I know. I know. But I am a successful man at work; with the rest of my family, why are women so elusive? What do they desire, crave, want? God knows I have no clue." He sighs. "I am going to let you in on a time honored woman secret, but you have to promise not to spread it to any other males under any circumstances. Agreed?" "Um, I guess I don't really have a choice". He sighed, loud enough that she could hear, but not loud enough as to disrupt the dialogue between them. "We have no idea what we want. You always act like it is only the men in this world that are confused, but we are equally confused. What about the guys, who don't call for a few days, or the guys who don't call, or the guys who call right away? Whom are we supposed to trust?" He laughed, obnoxiously enough that she had to ask yet another question in order to make it cease. "What's so funny? Why is your struggle tragic while mine causes loud outbursts of inappropriate laughter?" "No. No. Sorry, I didn't mean to offend. It's just your question: its so simple!" "Really, well, since I let you in on a woman's secret, it is only fair if I use it to barter for a male secret." Her offer was fair enough, he thought, so he complied. "The guy you go for is the one that calls you immediately. And before you go asking a million questions about why I will expound and tell you, but no questions until the end. Understand?" Her silence represented compliance. "Although most of you women believe that when a man calls right away it is only through sexual attraction, it could not be more wrong. He calls you right away because you are on his mind. Not just on it, you control it. He can't eat breathe or sleep without talking to you. Meaning: he can't live without you. A relationship can only work if the attraction, both physical and mental, does not surface within the first twenty-four hours. If it doesn't holding out is the worst thing you can do, instead go find someone who blows you off your feet in the first day/night". She was silent for a minute, allowing her ears and mind to filter out the message in what he was saying. She replied simply "that is why so many doors get shut in your face."
