As far as traveling adventures go I have had my fair share. I got lost in Italy, lost my luggage in Paris, was stung by a jelly fish in Costa Rica, and was chases by sharks in Australia. So this jersey girl's weekend getaway to a peaceful cabin in Pennsylvanian seemed anything but adventurous. Little did I know, it would be the greatest most memorable adventure of my life.
It had been a long cold winter so far in Hightstown New Jersey with very little snow and more rain than I care to see. So My boyfriend, Dan and I decided it was time to get away. He suggested a nice relaxing trip to his family cabin. With the promise of snow covered mountain tops, a roaring fire and a cozy cabin for two far away from civilization I was all too eager to pack my bags. I could just picture the icicles hanging off of the roof catching the sun and sending colorful beams of light shooting in every direction. I saw us wrapped up in a blanket huddled close by the fire, roasting marshmallows and making smores. It was to be the perfect romantic getaway, and a chance to have a white winter.
We were going to leave Saturday morning and return Tuesday afternoon for a nice long weekend. The Friday before we were to embark on our journey however, we get news of a blizzard like storm that was pounding Pennsylvania. We were a little concerned but we had made plans and we were not going to let a little snow slow us down. After all the storm would be over by the time we left and I had all wheel drive on my little Subaru. We could do it. So we set out as planned Saturday morning bright and early.
It was pouring rain. Not drizzling not sprinkling but pouring rain the entire way up. We had to keep the windows closed and the one hundred pound yellow lab panting in the back seat did nothing to keep the windows from fogging up. What should have been a five hour drive turned into nine, which meant it was dark by the time we arrived. Not to mention we were wrong about the storm being over. It was still snowing on top of the mountain. Five miles to go and everyone was squirming to get out of the car. Suddenly through the large flakes of snow we see something in the road. A tree had fallen from the storm, blocking our path and our only way to the cabin. We got out and flagged down some late night snowmobilers who only advice was to turn around and drive 15 miles back to the police station. With no where else to go we turned around hoping the department of transportation would haul the tree
