Most cringe when they hear the words like Unix or Linux, but if you're looking for a operating system that boasts a more than impressive stability; maybe Linux will be as welcome as a chocolate fudge sundae. OK, now that you have discarded you're traditional Windows based operating system, how can you make the most of the open-source system known as Linux? Honestly, I don't think I could just narrow my choices down without writing a full-blown book, but I will touch on my top favorite applications that you must-have if you're running Linux.
First before I give you my favorite Linux applications, I urge you to consider the K Desktop Environment (KDE) for your Linux or Unix based computer workstation. It is simple and easy to use, and offers a plethora of open-source applications and add-ons. I have tried several different applications such as GNOME on Unix workstations, but KDE is one of the most stable environments I have tested on Linux to date.
1.) Mozilla Firefox is one of the most used applications for my Linux machine. It is simple to use, compatible with almost any Internet web page source, and on Linux it runs at least five times faster than it did on my old Windows operating system. Firefox has several skins to choose from, and more add-on's than you could count using all available appendages. Personally, I adore the multi-window tabbing functionality, and like many open-source operating systems, there is much less security and system problems that occur oppose to using the more traditional Internet Explorer.
2.) Amarok is one of many audio players available for Linux, but this application wins hands down for simplicity and ease of use. I know there is Banshee and Audacious, but if you are a fan of the K Desktop Environment (KDE), then it won't be hard to make the same choice. Dubbed an I-Tunes clone, it offers a simple library management to keep all your music in order, and since it has never crashed on me; I think enough can't be said about the Amarok player. Although aesthetics are not important to me, there are enough custom themes available to download, so you can enjoy that personal touch.
3.) GIMP has the notoriety in Linux circles as being one of the most used image editor applications, and yet with several other versions available; GIMP is still the top choice among most. It is simple and fast to learn, and with an abundant of photo editing options to play with. I have to confess that I am not the biggest photo junkie out there, but almost anyone
